SERVICE OF PRAISE 2008

The Service commenced with the Provincial and Preceptory Banners being processed in, this was followed by a procession of the Provincial Prior, Provincial Sub Prior, distinguished guests, the Malta Delegation

and Knights of the Province, in full regalia.

Following the singing of the Templar Hymn, the bible was opened by the Provincial Prior, R.E. Knight Brian Blanchard and after welcoming those present The Very Rev. Jeffery John, Dean of St Albans, led the opening prayer.

A reading of Psalm 122 followed.

The Service for 2008 was held in the impressive setting of the Nave of The Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban, which on Sunday 13th April 2008 looked resplendent in the Spring sunshine.

Those present were then enthralled by Emma Lincoln, whose renderings of "Pie Jesu" and“Panis Angelicus” came either side of a reading of The Precepts of the Order by the Provincial Prior and were breathtaking. Her pure and angelic tones filling the Nave and making the toes and fingers tingle and hair stand on end.

R.E.Knight John Hay, KCTA, Past Provincial Prior gave a Reading from Luke 19, verses 37 - 48.

The Banner Bearers collected the Provincial Priory and Preceptory Banners, which were then presented to the Very Rev. Jeffery John for blessing, after which prayers were followed by the rousing singing of “I Vow to Thee My Country”.

This was followed by an Address by the Very Rev. Jeffery John, who reminded us that we were still in the Easter Season and talked enlighteningly about resurrection. He illustrated how rebirth from death is the entire pattern of our existence and as such, was nothing that should frighten us.

During the singing of “Praise my Soul” a collection was taken for the Ophthalmic Hospital at Jerusalem.

Prayers were followed by the Blessing, given by the Dean.

The National Anthem was then sung enthusiastically by the congregation.

The “finale” was a rousing rendering of  William Blake’s “Jerusalem” during which the Very Rev. Jeffery John was virged out.

Banners were collected and a colourful general recession took place under the direction of the Provincial Marshal, E.Kt. Tony Lapsley.

The attendance of around 200 included (in no particular order) two Past Provincial Priors of Hertfordshire,  John Hay and Peter Fotheringham, the 1st Grand Master Mason Arthur Craddock, Eddie Goodwin, Great Prior of Malta, the Intendant-General for Hertfordshire for the Red Cross of Constantine, Brian Muir, the District Grand Master for Hertfordshire for Royal and Select Masters, Colin Thurston, Ian Clift, 2nd Provincial Grand Principle (Herts),  and from outside the Order, Allan Atkinson, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Brian Tierney, Assistant Provincial Grand Master and Keith Gilbert, Provincial Grand Secretary (Hertfordshire Craft). After this splendid afternoon many of them sojourned afterwards to Ashwell House, not weary and fatigued, but uplifted and stimulated, for tea and refreshments.
