If you
were not at the KT Race Night on 29th September 2006 at Halsey Hall,
Cheshunt, then you missed an excellent or, as some might say, a ‘Brill’ night.
The idea was very simple;
you place your bets on any one of 8 horses using any of the wins,
places or forecasts you would get from the actual Tote at a live
event. A sealed box containing a film of a horse race is then
opened and played. The results are seen and the winners paid.
Once the crowd got used
to the idea, they got swept up in the moment and the shouting started.
It was very easy to forget that the encouragement given could not
have any effect on the results which were concluded some time in
the past. This did not stop every body cheering or jeering
throughout the night.

The Noisy Table

The Almost as Noisy Table
Enjoying
yourself is hungry work and a tremendous Shepherd’s pie half
way through the event was very well received and washed down with
copious amounts of alcoholic beverages.
Peter Brill was the
organiser of this event and he and his family worked incredibly hard
throughout the night. Funnily enough, “Honest Pete” the
bookmaker seemed quite an appropriate role for him.

Honest Pete sorts out the Odds
There was a very large
raffle and most people won something although, like at every other
raffle ever, some tables seemed luckier than others.
At the end of the evening
more than £1,600 had been raised. Our Provincial Prior
R.E.Knight Brian Blanchard said “What a
brilliant result”
He went on to say that
the 'take' will be split up, with some going to our charities and
some to Provincial funds.
He wished recorded that
he and the KT Province were very much indebted to Peter Brill for
all his efforts on our behalf and offered his grateful appreciation
to Peter’s band of helpers for all their assistance on the
tote etc.

So if you did miss this
one do yourself a favour and don’t miss the next one;
Or we will send the boys round.
